ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This thesis offers a contextual examination of the 1675 imperial festival which took place in Edirne (Adrianople) during the reign of Mehmed IV (r. 1648-1687). It intends to present a holistic approach to the festival, after the study of \u00d6zdemir Nutku in 1972. Distinctively, this study manifests the grounds of the Ottoman court\u2019s affairs for a festival gargantuan in scale at the late seventeenth century, as well as show many unseen layers of the festival. For the first time in the field, it introduces the firework expenses of a state-sponsored festival, revealing previously unexamined phases of such pyrotechnics broadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Each section of this work crosschecks textual narratives of the primary sources, including the most known as well as unfamiliar festival books, eyewitness diaries, and state annals, taking into consideration the context of the authors. In addition, this study investigates ignored dimensions of this event, such as the construction of time and space in the festival. Hence this thesis presents a renewal of the conventional narration regarding this princely festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00d6ZET<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bu tez, 1675 y\u0131l\u0131nda Edirne\u2019de (Adrianople), Sultan IV. Mehmed\u2019in (r. 1648-1687) d\u00f6neminde d\u00fczenlenen imparatorluk festivalinin ba\u011flamsal incelemesini sunmaktad\u0131r. Amac\u0131, \u00d6zdemir Nutku’nun 1972’de ki \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmas\u0131ndan sonra s\u00f6z konusu festival \u00fczerinde b\u00fct\u00fcnc\u00fcl olarak d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnebilmektir. Bu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma farkl\u0131 olarak, ge\u00e7 d\u00f6nem on yedinci y\u00fczy\u0131la ait bu devasa \u00f6l\u00e7ekli festivalin temellerini, festivalin devletle ili\u015fkisini g\u00f6z \u00f6n\u00fcnde bulundurarak, bir\u00e7ok g\u00f6r\u00fclmemi\u015f katman\u0131n\u0131 ortaya \u00e7\u0131karmaktad\u0131r. Ayr\u0131ca bu tez arac\u0131l\u0131\u011f\u0131yla, festivalin havai fi\u015fek harcamalar\u0131n\u0131n tutuldu\u011fu defter tan\u0131t\u0131lmakta ve fi\u015fek g\u00f6sterilerinin daha \u00f6nce bahsedilmemi\u015f a\u015famalar\u0131n\u0131 ayr\u0131nt\u0131l\u0131 olarak ortaya koymaktad\u0131r. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmada, i\u00e7indeki her bir b\u00f6l\u00fcm i\u00e7in, festival kitaplar\u0131, g\u00f6rg\u00fc tan\u0131klar\u0131n\u0131n g\u00fcnl\u00fckleri ve devlet kronikleri de dahil olmak \u00fczere bilindik ve bilinmedik bir\u00e7ok birincil kaynak, yazarlar\u0131n ba\u011flam\u0131 g\u00f6z \u00f6n\u00fcnde bulundurularak, metinsel anlat\u0131mlar\u0131 \u00e7apraz olarak sorgulanmaktad\u0131r. Ayr\u0131ca bu tezde, festivalde zaman ve mek\u00e2n\u0131n in\u015fas\u0131 gibi daha \u00f6nce g\u00f6z ard\u0131 edilmi\u015f boyutlar\u0131 da incelenmektedir. Dolay\u0131s\u0131yla s\u00f6z konusu tezin sundu\u011fu \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmayla, bu g\u00f6steri\u015fli festivalin geleneksel anlat\u0131m\u0131 uzun bir zaman sonra yenilenmektedir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
